Turkmen president bans smoking in public places
Text of report by Turkmen TV on 12th January
Decree by the Turkmen president [Saparmyrat Niyazov] on banning smoking.
Paying a tribute to the Turkmen people's customs, which have stood the test
of time, acknowledging the Turkmen nation's centuries-old devotion to a
healthy life style and in order to protect people's health;
in line with the holy "Rukhname" [Turkmen spiritual book] and Turkmen
President Saparmyrat Turkmenbashy's health policy and in order to continue
in the golden century the traditions of our forefathers, who had lived a
healthy life and been free from vice;
entering the 21st century and a new millennium and fulfiling the aspiration
of the independent and neutral Turkmenistan to join the world community in
the anti-smoking campaign I resolve:
to ban smoking in ministries, departments and enterprises, establishments
and organizations irrespective of their form of ownership, in military
units and subdivisions, in educational and children's establishments, in
theatres and cinemas, in public transport, in parks and public gardens and
other public places in Turkmenistan;
for the violation of the present decree a person is to be fined the amount
of one minimum salary [400,000-500,000 manats, about 30 dollars at black
market rate].
